Doing SEO for Flash Sites

A lot of people want to build flash sites these days, as there are a lot of reasons that marketing experts like them. They are visually appealing and interesting to the views, and the fluid and interactive nature of them can really make them stand out from the crowd of html websites that all look like they were cut from the same template. However, one of the problems that presents itself when creating a flash site, or more likely, having one created for you, is that learning how to SEO flash properly can be a time consuming endeavor, as it is much more difficult to create a good SEO site in flash than it is in HTML. The reason for this is that the search engine spiders will not be able to read the majority of the text on a flash page. If you were to view your page through a text only web browser, you’ll get an idea of what the spiders will crawl, and this can be sorely lacking on most flash pages.

The good news if you have your heart set on a flash site is that there are a lot of options to promote a website now that don’t require SEO flash techniques. Web 2.0 methods or marketing have often proved to be more successful in the last several years than the more traditional means of optimizing the text on the pages themselves for search engine results. If you write newsworthy content, getting your page mentioned on Digg or other social news sites can have a huge boost on your traffic. Getting listed in social bookmarking sites, like StumbleUpon, is valuable, as is building a social community around your site on Facebook or MySpace. Article marketing allows you to attract visitors as well as increasing SEO, even for a flash site, via building valuable inbound links from trusted sites.

Of course, anyone who has promoted a web site knows that all sites need a wide variety of promotional techniques employed to do extremely well, and this is no different for a flash site. If you do want to implement some SEO, link building with keyword based anchor text is going to be one of the most valuable things that you can do off site, because there is very little on site optimization options available to you. You can also consider creating an HTML version of your site which the spiders can crawl.
